Internet searches for Cross Country Skiing

There is no doubt there has been an uptick in the number of people cross-country skiing in North America since the pandemic, but it has not really translated into additional internet searches for cross-country skiing.  There is a noticeable trend that there are more searches near Christmas and Olympic years.  The overall trends have been consistent since 2004 when the dataset started.   Also, it is interesting that the Canadian Gold at the World Championships or the impressive results from the US Ski Team have not had much impact on the google searches.

The geographic breakdown of where people are searching from is also very telling with the most search density coming from the traditional cross country skiing regions.   Note that all of these number are relative with the top region being 100 and the others being a percentage of the most popular region.

FIS World Cup Interest

The google searches for the world cup are also not trending in the right direction.  There have been vast performance gains by both the Canadian and US Ski Team since 2004 and that has not translated into more searchers for the FIS world cup.
